Road Trip Wednesday: What Fable or Fairytale Would You Retell?

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered.

This Week's Topic is: In honor of this month's Bookmobile book, Marissa Meyer's CINDER, name a fable or story you'd like to see a retelling of. If you're feeling creative, come up with a premise of your own!

I've actually had an idea for a retelling of The Little Mermaid. However, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who would want to read it. haha! So I will spare you all and not go into detail.

But in general, I would really like to read a re-telling of The Little Mermaid.

  1. There are a lot of books out about mermaids so I'm wondering if any took The Little Mermaid approach? I would read it. It isn't a book, but I love the movie Ponyo which is a fun version of The Little Mermaid with little kids.

    1. I don't think I've read any mermaid books. The retelling I have in mind doesn't involve mermaids (just swimming). I'll have to look up Ponyo. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. You know, I was just thinking that THE LITTLE MERMAID can be retold without even factoring in the mermaid bit (if you're worried about that aspect). There are so many ways that this could play out while retaining all of the goodness of the Andersen tale. The key conflict in the story is that the protag and the love interest come from completely separate worlds. That would be so much fun to work with. I say go for it! :)

    1. Thanks for stopping by! Yes, that is what I was thinking--the two being from totally different worlds. My idea doesn't involve mermaids, just swimming. Maybe I will give it a try! :)

  3. Yeah, like Jaime said, the characters wouldn't have to be mermaids. The idea of unrequited love is something I think transcends culture -- we've all experienced it at one point or another.

  4. Totally - the original little mermaid would make a great remake. With its darkness, and heartbreak, would make a great retelling!

  5. One of my writing friends is currently querying a mermaid-free Little Mermaid retelling and it's awesome! You should go for it!
